Diet Wise book on Amazon (at last!)

Have you ever tried to deal with Amazon? It's certainly hard to bring forward a credible book if it is not sold on Amazon. Yet Amazon have emerged as just about the most impossible, pig-headed organization ever to deal with.

It has taken my agent nearly 5 months to get my new book DIET WISE listed properly. The irony is they had it up in December and started selling copies, even though they were not available. We asked them to stop taking orders until the book was ready.

Since then they have simply said it was "unavailable". This is despite the sounds from my camp rising to hysterical screams that: YES IT IS AVAILABLE! We phoned and e-mailed just about every day. Somedays we got a reply and were reassured it would be fixed "right away".

Over the course of time these re-assurances came to mean nothing. Months passed. Eventually, we learned that the calls are being farmed out to an Indian call center. The complaint was taken and then promptly dumped in the trash can. Turns out you have to call around 3- 4.00 am to have any chance of speaking to someone actually in the office in Seattle.

Anyhoo, it's now available on Amazon. They are carrying copies. No discount yet, I see, so why not buy direct from the author? read more about Diet Wise, the book.

At last - a really MAJOR cancer breakthrough.

I'm very excited by a new study which shows that microRNA can identify lethal pancreatic cancer and may even be able to predict long- and short-term survival. The promising marker, described in the May 2, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, appears to differentiate between a healthy pancreas, cases of chronic pancreatitis, and cancer. In an accompanying editorial, the authors call the analyses "an initial glimpse into the future of clinical oncology."

I call it a breakthrough. The field of clinical oncology is poised for unprecedented innovation. Of course we are not there yet but the possibility of detecting cancer early has always been the holy grail. This test also has power to stop doctors lying to patients and telling them they have cancer when they don't - just to grab some more cash toward their mortgage (oh yes, it happens).

The researchers were able to distinguish pancreatic cancer from normal pancreas in 90% of cases and, separately, from chronic pancreatitis in 93% of cases. A refinement of the test allowed the researchers to accurately identify which patients with pancreatic cancer would live longer.

Nice story

This was passed on to me by correspondent Jim Catano of Orem, Utah. At one level it's trite but if you dump your Smart Alec facade, it's a very expressive, instructive story.

The only survivor of a shipwreck washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed fervently for God to rescue him. Each day he scanned the horizon for help, but none came. Exhausted, he managed to build a small driftwood hut to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions. But one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived to find his little hut in flames.

He felt the worst had happened and that all was lost. He cried out, "God! How could you do this to me?"

The next morning, he was awakened by an approaching boat that had come to rescue him!

"How did you know I was here?" he asked his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

It's easy to get discouraged when things are going badly, but God is at work in our lives...even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

Big Pharma jumps on the nutrition supplements wagon!

Bayer HealthCare Introduces Bayer Nutritional Science, a New Line of Nutritional Supplements Especially Designed for Vital, Active Boomers
2007-04-03 09:01:00

Bayer HealthCare, Morristown, NJ, has introduced Bayer Nutritional Science, a new line of nutritional supplements that unites science and nutrition to help active Baby Boomers maximize their vitality. The Bayer Nutritional Science line consists of five unique formulations to support heart, mind, joint and eye health as well as a daily multivitamin, which supports body and cell health-all areas of particular concern for Baby Boomers.

"As a recognized leader in consumer wellness for more than 100 years, Bayer is focused on advancing the wellness of Boomers through science and innovation. Bayer Nutritional Science was created to meet the demands of the growing segment of Americans who are focused on keeping their bodies and minds vital and active-a group the media have recently identified as Generation V," said Girard Smith, vice president, Consumer Wellness and Division Market Research at Bayer Consumer Care. "We also know that selecting the right supplements to address specific health concerns can be confusing. We've designed the Bayer Nutritional Science line to make the benefits of each product clear, which simplifies the decision-making process for consumers because they can easily select the product or products that are right for them."

All of the Bayer Nutritional Science formulations contain scientifically proven levels of key ingredients and can be taken together on a daily basis. Bayer Nutritional Science features the following formulations:

Daily Multivitamin: Vital Body & Cells Formula
- Comprehensive multivitamin that provides 100% of key vitamins and minerals the body needs everyday
- The only multivitamin with antioxidants that include pomegranate and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) to help promote cell health, including during the cell regeneration process

Eye Health & Vitality
- Lutein, zeaxanthin and powerful antioxidants support healthy cells and tissues in the eye

Vital & Sharp Mind
- Omega 3 (DHA) and ginkgo biloba help support healthy brain function and memory, concentration and mental sharpness

Heart Vitality
- Keep the heart strong and healthy with: phytosterols to significantly lower "bad cholesterol" (or LDL) as well as total cholesterol levels; folic acid to help maintain healthy blood pressure; and CoQ10, a heart health antioxidant

Joint & Bone Vitality
- Glucosamine and chondroitin together with calcium and vitamin D help keep joints flexible and bones strong

The joint a bone formula is nonsense - no magnesium, no boron and no strontium!

Dichloroacetic acid (DCA), cancer breakthrough or myth?

DCA or dichloroacetic acid is being hailed by some as a possible cancer cure and by others as too toxic to give to humans. You know I fully support the use for cancer alternatives. But in my opinion DCA is far too toxic and has no clinical value: a case of desperate people looking for the cure that will save them.

I deplore the mentality which often accompanies the desperate search cancer victims make for that one “magic bullet” that is going to save their lives. This is the same thinking as allopathic medicine and look at the failure rate that has.

It’s still trying to think outside the self and to some other source that will come to the rescue. I even wonder sometimes if these people even bother to change their diet?

The fight against cancer comes from within, that’s what I want to teach you more than any other single factor. It’s about better diet and nutrition, chemical clean-up (detox) and emotional clearing… It's NOT about laetrile,

Cancer is a wake-up call. You have to change something, otherwise the lesson is wasted. It will just come back, unless you tackle the real cause. But if you do it right, cancer is very very treatable and totally survivable.

Death by chocolate: bad news for parrots and coyotes!

The New Zealand Veterinary Journal, June 2007 (55(3):149-51) carried a sad story of a dead research parrot, an adult male kea (Nestor notabilis), that had been used in behavioural tests of problem-solving ability. It's death was something of a mystery at first. The crop contained 20 g of what appeared to be dark chocolate; a conservative estimate of the dose of methylxanthines ingested by the bird was 250 mg/kg theobromine, 20 mg/kg caffeine and 3 mg/kg theophylline. Histopathological examination revealed acute degenerative changes to the liver, kidneys and brain.

DIAGNOSIS: Acute combination methylxanthine toxicity after opportunistic ingestion of chocolate.

Methylxanthines are found in coffee, tea, and chocolate products. Tarajuilie tea from India, cocoa powder, and cocoa nibs contained the highest levels of methylxanthines. Theobromine, caffeine, and theophylline combined in the ratios observed in tea and chocolate were ingested by coyotes. Although both mixtures induced acute toxicity, the symptoms accompanying the chocolate methylxanthine mimic were preferable. It was discovered that a 5:1 theobromine/caffeine mixture was very lethal. This mixture was then administered to coyotes using the coyote lure operative device (CLOD). Death occurred in every coyote that ingested any portion of the CLOD contents. These results indicate that mixtures of theobromine and caffeine have the potential to be developed into a selective, effective, and socially acceptable toxicant for the control of pest coyotes.

Socially acceptable? I presume they mean the beasts will die with a smile on their lips!

And in case you are wondering...

A review of the literature published in Crit Rev Toxicol. 1982;9(4):275-312. showed that chocolate and cocoa methylxanthines have no adverse effects that would be injurious to man..

Is this the most important diet book ever?

It is not a plan. In fact it explains why diet plans often don't work and why they make some people feel sick. The theme is that everyone is different - no two people tolerate foods in exactly the same way.

There is no such thing as a universal diet plan, nor can there ever be, as this book explains. What you can do is work out your own unique eating plan, which is just about perfect for you. Then you'll lose weight, look good, feel great, and live a long long time...

It's a sort of super-Rolls-Royce version of the modern detox diet, by one of the pioneers who actual first developed the concept of "detox" decades ago. As well as plentiful explanations of the science and mechanisms, there are lots of moving and heart-warming stories about how people overcame seemingly hopeless odds to recover their health and wellbeing, using these vital life and biology principles.

THE GUESS WHO? QUOTE:

GREATNESS

"A man is as great as the dreams he dreams, as great as the love he bears; As great as the values he redeems, and the happiness he shares. A man is as great as the thoughts he thinks, as the worth he has attained; As the fountains at which his spirit drinks, and the insight he has gained. A man is as great as the truth he speaks, as great as the help he gives, As great as the destiny he seeks, as great as the life he lives."

It's C.E. Flynn. Of course he meant to say "man OR WOMAN"!
